What Breaks EV Networks in the Real World

EV charging infrastructure fails in predictable ways. Understanding these failure modes is the first step to building reliable systems.

Connectivity drops silently

Mobile backhaul fails. WiFi drops. Chargers look online but are not. Users try to charge, nothing happens. The dashboard shows green.

Configuration drift

Someone updates one charger. Others remain unchanged. Heartbeat intervals diverge. Authorization modes differ. The network becomes inconsistent.

Transaction orphans

A session starts but the stop message never arrives. The database shows "active" forever. Billing fails. Energy is unbilled.

Firmware mismatches

Different charger firmware versions behave differently. Some support features others do not. Testing becomes impossible at scale.

User-initiated abuse

Users unplug mid-charge. They plug in and leave. They complain about stations that work fine. Operations gets noise instead of signal.

No audit trail

Something went wrong last Tuesday. What happened? Nobody knows. Logs were not kept. The vendor blames you. You blame them.

We built Chargify to address these failure modes. Want to learn more?
